Learn Kung Fu for Self Defence in Dorset

Hello and welcome to the Martial Arts City website – I am a Kung Fu teacher based in Dorset.

I teach Kung Fu for Self Defence to individuals and small groups, via Private Lessons plus occasional Workshops & Seminars.

Location: Swanage, Dorset

I teach Kung Fu mainly from my home in Swanage, Dorset.

If you’re interested in learning Kung Fu for Self Defence purposes and live within easy travel distance of Swanage, such as in Bournemouth, Poole or Wareham, you’ve come to the right place.

If you live further afield, I may still put on a seminar or workshop near you – these can be good taster sessions, for insights into how I train and what I teach, but for serious progress at serious pace, private lessons are highly recommended.

What kind of Kung Fu do I teach?

Well, I have my own style, as most people do once they get to a certain level. My style is mainly based on Wing Chun integrated with Tai Chi. But I also incorporate elements of other systems.

My focus is on Balance and Practicality, with attention to technical detail. I won’t ask you to try anything that I can’t physically prove the value of first. I try to focus on what matters most, for you to develop as quickly as possible in your Self Defence ability, and for you to be confident in the progress of your training from the very beginning, but in case it’s not for you, no worries, as your first lesson is free.

Why train with me?

  • If your priority is fitness, you’ll probably be better doing something more energy-demanding. Perhaps something with a lot of jumping, like Capoeira or Taekwondo, or something with a lot more wrestling, like Judo or BJJ. My kung fu is more concerned with energy efficiency, although Judo and Capoeira can still complement it very nicely.
  • If your priority is making friends, try joining a club with standard classes and a buzzing atmosphere. You probably don’t want private lessons, which are designed to focus on your development as a martial artist, with minimal distractions – ideal for busy people who want to progress as quickly as possible.
  • If your priority is gaining a sense of achievement, you may prefer to train in a sporty style of martial art – perhaps something that’s included in the Olympic Games.
  • But if you’re more interested in learning a technical yet graceful yet practical system of Chinese Kung Fu rooted in timeless philosophy, mainly for the purpose of Self Defence, then you’ve surely come to the right place here.
