Brighton & Hove offer quite a mix of Wing Chun styles. Some classes are lighthearted, some are serious. Some are hyper-traditional, some are hyper-modern. Different schools have different atmospheres, so there’s probably something for everyone whether you just want a bit of exercise, want to be able to defend yourself in basic ways, or wish to develop yourself as an advanced martial artist!
1 Kevin Liu – St Johns Centre, Palmeira Square, Hove, BN3 2FL
Kevin Liu teaches Foshan style Wing Chun similar to how Leung Jan taught it long before Yip Man heavily changed the forms. He has also trained under Lok Yiu who was a student of Yip Man.
On his website you can find videos of him performing his version of Siu Lim Tao, the first form of Wing Chun, and you may spot a few differences to the more common Yip Man way of doing it, for example, Kevin Liu brings his Wu Sau back to his hip and the Fok Sau then starts from beside his hip rather than sticking on the centreline in front of his belly. Some people say this is a more balanced, more structurally holistic, less collapsed way of practising the Three Prayers to Buddha (Saam Pai Fat).
